The Ultimate Sauna Packing List (Summer Edition)
Something in my hunter-gatherer instincts really lights up at the first opportunity to pack, whether it’s for a day trip, to the other side of the ocean, or to the sauna. I’ve been to SO many different saunas in Helsinki these past few months that packing for the sauna has become second nature for me. Although this was from my stay in the summer season, I’m sure most of it could also apply to the winter season (plus some winter boots and a coat, probably). Read on to discover my personal sauna packing list that is as lightweight as it is all-encompassing, anywhere you have access to a well heated sauna.
The wristband is the monthly pass to Allas Sea Pool, which I visited constantly.
The Ultimate Sauna Packing List
1 non-plastic bottle of spring water or pure coconut water for hydration. In the sauna, you’ll be sweating and detoxifying lots, so hydration is key. Avoid plastic bottles when possible due to the BPA and other chemicals, although this might not be feasible when travelling. Add a squeeze of fresh organic lemon and a pinch of sea salt to your water if you like, for better hydration.
1 lightweight, reusable waterproof bag or pouch made of natural fibers for toiletries
1 silicone travel shampoo tube, or similar. In Helsinki, I found an excellent natural shampoo by a brand called Frantsila Organics.
1 small box of charcoal (or other saponified, non-toxic) soap
1 small bottle of unscented Dr. Bronner’s as body and hand wash, and for cleaning my prescription glasses if needed. Sometimes I skip this if I’m feeling really minimal, as the soap bar is usually enough.
1 bath towel (I found a nice Marimekko one that I’ll be using eternally)
1 copper and horsehair dry brush for before your sauna session (this is really luxurious, but regular dry brushes are great, too)
1 swim suit (IDEALLY only cotton/organic cotton, undyed or plant dyed, not polyester/spandex as the plastic toxins get through your pores when the cloth is heated up, but it was all I had for the saunas where bathing suits were mandatory)
hair ties
1 change of underwear
1 pair of Earth Runners or other waterproof sandals — for wearing in the change rooms/showers and sauna itself, since the floor can be hot)
cash or credit/debit cards for sauna entry and any food, and/or sauna entry pass
charged up smartphone for navigation
tote bag or other small backpack to carry all the goods
padlock for locker, in case the place doesn’t provide them
